I'm home from work today, feeling sorry for myself today as I try to rest through this gross cold I seem to have caught. I figured I'd take the opportunity to pay some attention to my poor, neglected little blog. Baby steps, though - I'm about ready for a nap!
The other night I was laying on the couch, looking at our Christmas tree and thinking about how I'd told Nathan I wanted a new, bigger tree next year. Staring at our little tree, I realized I could actually fit a lot more ornaments on this tree than I give it credit for (not that I don't still want a new one next year - this one is cheap and falling apart!) I also thought how pathetic it is that I only have a few handmade ornaments on my tree - and I call myself a crafter! So I challenged myself to make one ornament a day for 5 days straight. Simple enough, and a good way to force myself into blogging, because if I'm going to make these darn things, you can bet I'm going to show them off -- for posterity if nothing else.
So last night, I made this cute little felt and paperclip ice skate ornament. It was inspired half by this tutorial at BHG, and half by an old little tiny red felt/paperclip skate ornament I remember that I think my mom made when she was little. I made mine in gray felt with white and silver beads. I actually wanted to make it with white felt, but when I realized I didn't have any, I figured gray was just as nice.
The BHG template is about twice as big as the one I made; I wanted to use a small, regular-sized paperclip and not a big one because that's how my mom's was done - just a tiny thing. In retrospect I probably should have sewn the little beaded snowflake farther down, but it turned out cute anyhow. I added little seed beads, thread laces and sequins, and did a whipstitch around the edges and filled it with a little polyfill stuffing. I wish I'd had gray thread, but ah well - I still like it.
Another one tomorrow! For now I'm going to snuggle on my couch and take a nap in the hopes it will magically make me better. It's rainy and gross outside today, which helps the snuggly-ness of my couch by the tree. If only if it had snowed, like it did last weekend. It wasn't much, but cut me some slack - it's Alabama. We cancel school for this kind of thing.
First snow in our first house! Can't believe this is the same tree that was covered in bright red leaves just a week ago.
Wow, I had forgotten those little red skates. They were a pin to wear, and no I did not make them. They were a gift?? I like yours. And yes, it is an ugly, rainy night here, isn't it?
